Stoicism in the noisy, modern world and a book recommendation

Stoicism is an old philosophy that is as relevant today as it was then. With all the stuff life offers, it is easy to get addicted and hard to practice self-control. Also, life is demanding and taxing, and there may not be much time for reflection. However, stoicism emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the scope of the power of a person and not being swept up by emotions.

Book recommendation

Newcomers to philosophy and stoicism should read The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday. It's a wonderful book meant to be read every day at the convenience of the reader. Each day of the year is assigned a passage from historical figures on different topics covering the themes of perception, action, and will. Aside from the mentioned passages, Holiday adds his own interpretation and breaks down the topics in easy-to-understand words for the average reader.

The wonders of driving a car

Driving in a city isn’t exactly the picture of a relaxing afternoon. But when passing through picturesque sceneries of lush landscapes with the sun hiding behind the trees and traffic nonexistent except for you, driving feels magical.

The invention of the car and the internal combustion engine has got to be one of the most important milestones in modern human history. Travel has gotten easier along with the transportation of goods. While the internal combustion engine is overstaying its welcome, it was necessary for our society’s development. Certainly, leisure travel would be harder without cars and their engines.

There’s a certain feeling when driving for the first time - a liberating, I-am-in-control feeling. For most people, learning how to drive happens at a turning point in their lives. Maybe for some people, first-time driving symbolizes independence from their parents or that they are becoming adults.

Each capable person should try driving a car once in their life. And it’s a safe bet that they’ll probably love driving.
